Feral Cat TNR Services - Trap, Neuter, Return

Street Cat HUB provides spay/neuter for free-roaming community cats in the city of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County utilizing TRAP NEUTER RETURN (TNR) services. This service is free when City or County funding is available. We provide spay/neuter to outlying counties for a fee or when funding is available. TNR is the only method proven to be both EFFECTIVE AND HUMANE in controlling the population of free-roaming community cats, allowing them to live out their natural lives where they already are while preventing them from reproducing and avoiding unnecessary euthanasia. Please see our FAQ page for more information, including why removing or relocating is ineffective. FEMALE CATS CAN GET PREGNANT AS YOUNG AS 4 MONTHS AND HAVE THEIR FIRST LITTER AT 6 MONTHS. The only way to prevent exponential population growth is preventing additional litters through spay and neuter. We agree, kittens are cute, but every unaltered kitten and adult cat in the community continues the cycle, leading to competing demands for resources such as food, water and shelter, limited or no access to veterinary care, and strained neighbor relations.

Trap-Neuter-Return

We ONLY accept cats in approved humane traps. This is for the safety of the cat, our staff, and you. Cats arriving in carriers have to be transferred to traps which is stressful for the cat and unsafe for the person transferring so your appointment will be rescheduled. Our Trap loan process is described below but if you use your own we recommend TruCatch 30LTD, which is 30”x11”x9”.

  • Trap Loans: We have a trap loan program which requires a deposit that will be refunded upon return of the trap. You trap the cats and bring them to us for spay/neuter then you pick them up after recovery and return them to their outdoor home. If you’re interested in self-trapping feral or free-roaming community cats in your neighborhood, learn how it works here.

  • Trapping Class: We offer on-site training for a successful TNR experience! You will have an option to sign up for this after submitting your TNR request.

  • Colony Reporting Only: If you are unable or uninterested in utilizing our self trapping resources, please select “Report a Colony” in the dropdown menu under “What services are you requesting?”. Please do not hesitate to report a colony, as this helps us identify and target areas with larger colonies. Please also consider talking to your neighbors, as they may already be working with us to TNR the cats in your neighborhood, or be willing to collaborate with you and others on self-trapping.

  • Please fill out the form on this page to request TNR services. After completing the form you will receive an email confirmation. If you do not see one, please check your SPAM Folder

You can also call and leave us a message at: (505) 247-9357

If you’re filling out the form on behalf of someone without internet access, please put “no internet access” in the email field and we will call them.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Cats/kittens must be a minimum of 2 pounds and healthy enough for spay/neuter.

  • Cats/kittens will be fixed and returned to you; we are not a shelter or rescue and we do not remove/relocate cats. It is your responsibility (as the trapper of the cats/kittens) to return the cats/kittens to the location where you trapped them. It is illegal to remove and relocate cats.

  • All cats/kittens will be ear-tipped (ear-tipping explained).

Ill OR INJURED CAT

  • We currently provide spay/neuter only. If you have found a cat or kitten that is ill or injured and requires medical assistance, please click the button below:

  • If you have trapped a cat that appears ill or injured, please notify staff during the intake process. The vet on staff during your scheduled spay/neuter will do a general health screening and we will provide treatment as feasible.

KITTENS

  • We do not accept requests for kitten surrenders; we provide spay/neuter with return only.

  • Do not trap kittens under 2 pounds (roughly 8-10 weeks) unless you are prepared to house them yourself or have already arranged their entry to a shelter or rescue.

  • We encourage you to socialize feral kittens if you want to reduce the number of stray cats in your neighborhood and improve the odds you’ll be able to find them a home or shelter/rescue placement. This is easiest before they’re 7 weeks old; if you wait until they’re older than that, they may be permanently feral. Here are a few helpful resources:
