Volunteering With Street Cat HUB

Volunteer Requirements:

  • In-building volunteers should be in a low-risk COVID demographic.

  • Age 16 and older (unless otherwise specified in position).

  • Some volunteer jobs require the ability to squat, bend, twist, lift and stand for at least two hours.

Volunteer Positions:

Spay/Neuter Recovery Volunteer

Position Description: Assist clinic staff in the surgical recovery of patients, including help with monitoring vitals, taking temperatures, occasional extubation, ensuring post-operative warmth, and providing food/water once patients have fully recovered. Additional responsibilities will include keeping the recovery space clean, organized, and functional, and providing basic cat care such as bedding, food, and water.

Skills Required: This is a predominating standing position but also requires bending, kneeling, stretching, twisting, and lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs. Needs to be safety oriented. Good organizational skills are critical, as well as the ability to follow directions and be flexible with change.  Must be ok with seeing and cleaning blood, feces, urine, saliva, etc. Because of the nature of surgery, volunteers must be attentive and methodical in their job and dedicated to all life-saving protocols and procedures. Legible handwriting is important for creating medical records. Must be comfortable working with cats. There will be direct contact with cleaning chemicals. Must be 18+.

Recovery Assistant Volunteer

Position Description: Assist Spay/Neuter Recovery Volunteers in the surgical recovery of patients, including collecting supplies, keeping the recovery space clean, organized, and functional, and providing basic cat care such as bedding, food, and water. This position does not require direct contact with fearful, fractious, or feral cats.

Skills Required: This is a predominating standing position but also requires bending, kneeling, stretching, twisting, and lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 lbs. Needs to be safety oriented. Good organizational skills are critical as well as the ability to follow directions and be flexible with change.  Must be ok with seeing and cleaning blood, feces, urine, saliva, etc. Legible handwriting is important for creating medical records. Must be comfortable working with cats. There will be direct contact with cleaning chemicals. Must be 16+.

Clean Team Volunteer

Position Description: Work in partnership with the Spay/Neuter Recovery team to create a sanitary and welcoming environment. Specific responsibilities will include cleaning feces and other bodily fluids from kennels and traps, running and folding laundry, sweeping and mopping floors, and other various cleaning duties. 

Skills Required: This is a predominating standing position but also requires bending, kneeling, stretching, twisting, and lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs.  Attention to detail is crucial, as is the ability to follow directions and be flexible with change. It is important to be a self-starter and an independent worker. Must be ok with seeing and cleaning blood, feces, urine, saliva, etc. Must be comfortable working with cats. There will be direct contact with cleaning chemicals such as Rescue. Must be 16+.

Clinic Volunteer

Position Description: Work with the veterinary staff providing a variety of back-room assistance. Tasks may include cleaning, preparing, and sterilizing surgical instruments; folding laundry; preparing and administering vaccines; shaving and sterilizing cats in preparation for surgery; other duties as assigned by vet staff.

Skills Required: This is a predominating standing position but also requires bending, kneeling, stretching, twisting, and lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs. Needs to be safety oriented. Good organizational skills are critical, as well as the ability to follow directions, work as a team, and be flexible with change.  Must be ok with seeing and cleaning blood, feces, urine, saliva, etc. Because of the nature of surgery, volunteers must be attentive and methodical in their job and dedicated to all life saving protocols and procedures. Additional Qualifications: Completed at least three (3) shifts and ten (10) hours as a Spay/Neuter Recovery volunteer, receive approval from the Veterinary Clinic Manager and the Volunteer Coordinator.

Administrative Support Volunteer

Position Description: Work with the Community Cat Program Manager and other staff to input data, create surgical forms, and put together go-home paperwork. Other administrative duties as assigned. This position requires on-site work at Street Cat HUB’s office.

Skills Required: This is a predominating sitting position but the ability to bend, twist, carry, and lift is preferred. Good organizational skills are critical, as well as the ability to follow directions and be flexible with change. Legible handwriting is important for creating medical records. Must be comfortable working with cats. Must be 16+.

Outreach Team Volunteer

Position Description: Educate about Street Cat HUB and TNR through events, flyers, door hangers, and business partnerships. Create appropriate visual and written educational materials. Spanish-speaking is a plus.

Time Commitment: No minimum time commitment; we suggest that an Outreach Team volunteer chooses another volunteer team to join in conjunction. Days may include weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Skills Required: Candidates will be skilled at verbal communication with others, and will be comfortable initiating conversation with members of the public. Must be 16+.

Trapping Education Volunteer

Position Description: Work with the Community Cat Program Manager to support private trapping clients in the community. Provide troubleshooting resources for private trapping clients via phone, email, or in-person. Run trap classes if staff is unavailable.

Time Commitment: Shifts are on-call on a rotating basis. Volunteers should expect to spend roughly one hour a week providing client support. If volunteer provides in-person support, travel expectations will be limited to the volunteer’s city quadrant of choice.

Skills Required: Candidates will be skilled at verbal communication with others, and will be comfortable initiating conversation with members of the public. Must have prior experience with trapping. Spanish speaking is a plus. Must be 18+.

Transport Team Volunteer

Position Description: Work with the Community Cat Program Manager to independently transport cats between private residences and Street Cat Hub. This position will involve direct communication with cat caretakers. 

Time Commitment: Shifts are on an as-needed basis and will involve both transport to and from Street Cat Hub. Shifts are typically available AM and PM on Monday through Saturday. Travel expectations will be limited to the volunteer’s city quadrant of choice.

Skills Required: Candidates will be skilled at verbal communication with others, and will be comfortable initiating conversation with members of the public. Must be reliable, be able to assess safety risks, and make independent decisions. Spanish speaking is a plus. Must be 18+.
